Job Description:
The Nebraska State Fire Marshal Agency is currently seeking a Fire Investigations Assistant that possesses excellent organizational skills and the disposition to work well with other teammates and the public. This position will include both office clerical duties and responses to large scale fire incidents to assist the Investigations Division. Under general supervision of the Investigations Chief, the position will provide vital operations assistance to the Investigations Division that requires a smooth and seamless transition of duties from an office setting to fire scene fieldwork, at times outside normal business hours, adverse weather conditions, and physically demanding conditions. The position is subject to call and requires after hour responses, therefore residency to be located within close proximity to Lincoln or as determined by the Agency.

Job Duties: Respond as requested to fire scenes at any time of the day or night, dealing with variable weather elements and work conditions. Specific duties are to mobilize and transport equipment, including large emergency vehicles and trailers; to perform the duties of the official scribe recording event activities and to perform the duties of evidence technician. Evidence technician duties include to receive and handle incoming and outgoing evidence ensuring proper packaging and identification while ensuring the chain of custody is maintained. Maintain the operability of State assets utilized at fire scenes including the mobile command unit, trailers, and other equipment used by field investigators. Maintain two off-site storage locations, including an equipment storage building and an evidence facility. This duty includes organize, maintain, disseminate, and request replenishment of stock as needed; maintain control of inventory, evidence and other State assets. Enforcement of the Safe Cigarette Certification Program which includes review lab results, certification information, and detailed lab reports to ensure that cigarettes meet an approved standard. Receive requests for fire investigation reports; compile and disseminate reports and materials as authorized. Provide direct support to the Investigation Division to include receive and route calls, file electronic documents, transcribe dictated reports, and to digitize paper documents and files. Using data extracted from records management system, prepare the monthly Uniform Crime/Arrest Reports; compile statistical information from case files. Other duties as assigned within the scope of classification.

Requirements / Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: Coursework/training or experience related to research, presentation, or publication in an area related to the programs or functions of the employing agency; business administration; accounting; customer service; and/ or technical support work, including use of computer software such as word processing, spreadsheets, and database management.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience in fire service, law enforcement, or emergency services. A valid drivers license with ability to obtain a CDL endorsement. Experience in the operation and basic maintenance of motor vehicles, equipment, and tools. Must possess good character. Experience with office processes and procedures. Establish and maintain good working relationships. Be self-motivated and work independently with limited supervision. Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds repeatedly; crawl, walk, and climb stairs or ladders, and stand for long periods; must be able to safely operate a pickup, pull trailers, class C and class A motorhome used for incident responses. Applicant must be proficient and knowledgeable in connecting/disconnecting trailers and navigating a combination tow vehicle/trailer in cities and open highways/interstate.

Other: Regular and reliable attendance is required. This position requires travel. As such, the incumbent must be able to present a valid driver's license or another form of reliable transportation.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of fire scene operations; investigation procedures; office processes and procedures; customer service processes and principles; associated computer applications such as word processing, file management, record keeping, and database management. Skills in active listening; asking questions; understanding instructions; managing time and priorities; applying critical thinking techniques. Ability to prepare reports and maintain confidential records; basic computer, phone knowledge and skills. Skilled in the operation and basic maintenance of motor vehicles, equipment, and tools. Ability to: communicate information distinctly, concisely, and non-emotionally under stressful circumstances with individuals and groups by person, telephone, computer, email, or correspondence to exchange information and ideas; understand and apply instructions; maintain confidential information; establish and maintain good working relationships; be self-motivated and work independently with limited supervision. Ability to perform manual labor in adverse weather conditions. Determine the materials and equipment necessary to schedule / maintain / repair equipment. Understand and follow instructions.
