ABOUT THE POSITION

Public Assistance Investigators perform increasingly responsible investigative duties related to suspected fraudulent application submission for and receipt of public assistance. They are sworn peace officers as defined as Penal Code Section 830.35 (a), with law enforcement duties. All vacancies are located within the Department of Child Support Services.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
  • Possession of a valid Regular or Specialized Basic P.O.S.T. certificate at the time of application; OR,
  • Successful completion of a California Basic P.O.S.T. Waiver Exam, with documentation from P.O.S.T.; OR
  • Successful Completion of a Regular Basic or Specialized Investigators' Basic Course Academy and possession of a valid Certificate of Completion; AND
1. One (1) year of investigative experience at the level of Public Assistance Investigator Trainee with the County of San Diego, or as a welfare fraud investigator in a California County; OR,
2. One (1) year of full time experience conducting criminal investigations for a law enforcement agency as a peace officer under penal code sections 830.1 and/or 830.35 (a).

INTERVIEWS AND HIRING PROCESS
The timeline for this recruitment is outlined below.
  • Background Pre-screening Process begin within 10 days of the posting close date.
  • Interviews will be scheduled upon successful the conclusion of background prescreening.
  • Offers are extended once background is complete due to the nature of the role. Note: Current County employees will not be excluded from additional background screening. The background process may be lengthy. We find that candidates can help expedite some parts of the data gathering process.
  • Anticipated Start Date: Start date will be based upon successful completion of medical screening or other mutually agreed upon date.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

As part of the County of San Diego's pre-employment process, prospective candidates will undergo a background check (including fingerprinting) and a pre-employment medical screening prior to beginning County employment. Additional types of background investigations may be conducted based on the job-related activities of the position. Current employees may be exempt from this process.

BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION Must have a reputation for honesty and trustworthiness. Prior to appointment, candidates will be subject to a thorough background investigation which may include a psychological, truth verification or other examination or test. T his may require candidates to appear in person Candidates successful in the evaluation process will be required to complete the following: a comprehensive background investigation, a psychological examination, and a complete medical examination. Felony convictions will be disqualifying. Misdemeanor convictions may be disqualifying depending on type, number, severity, and recency.

Qualified applicants will be placed on a twelve (12) month employment list based on scores received during the evaluation of information contained in their employment and supplemental applications.
