Job Description

Assistant Professor – Duties and Responsibilities

  • Instruct UH learners and faculty regarding US Affiliated Pacific Island (USAPI) health system capacity, cultural, and geopolitical factors that impact health, health equity, and JABSOM’s diversity, equity, and inclusion activities
  • Instruct USAPI health professionals and health professions students in cancer or chronic diseases (i.e., diabetes) related topics, to build local USAPI health system capacity and workforce
  • Assist the Principal Investigator (PI) and other partners in developing the curriculum, training tools, and resources for implementation, evaluation, and communication on cancer and its risk factors to improve the health and well-being of the underserved Pacific Islands
  • Assist the Principal Investigator in the creative and strategic decision-making of the Pacific Cancer Programs. Assist in the development and implementation of strategic plans and work plans aligned with the Pacific Cancer Program grants, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Pacific Regional Central Cancer Registry, Pacific Comprehensive Cancer Control Program, Pacific Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health (REACH), and Pacific Against Cervical Cancer (PACe) projects.
  • Foster trans-Pacific collaboration for cancer prevention and control, including national and international cancer and other non-communicable disease partners
  • Works to maintain key partnerships and relationships with USAPI health leaders and policymakers
  • Productively engage with different institutions, US Federal and international agencies, and governments to promote, develop, and implement cancer control activities
  • Actively seek extramural funding in the area of cancer and its risk factors and organize the teams in preparing grant applications
  • Attends JABSOM faculty development sessions and department meetings
  • Present scholarly, peer-reviewed research in the area of cancer and its risk factors
  • Other duties as assigned, including, but not limited to, participating in community engagement activities separately or in conjunction with the UH Cancer Center Cancer Prevention in the Pacific team members.
  • Actively collaborate with the UH Cancer Center and the University of Guam Pacific Island Partnership for Cancer Health Equity initiatives
Associate Professor – Duties and Responsibilities Same as Assistant Professor with the additional responsibilities below:
  • Co-lead (as Co-I or eventual Co-PI) the federal grants, research, health policy, and public health programs that affect the health of individuals and populations in the USAPI
  • Actively maintain extramural funding in the area of cancer and its risk factors and organize the teams in preparing grant applications
  • Publish scholarly, peer-reviewed research in the area of cancer and its risk factors
  • Participate in relevant national and/or international organizations and committees
Assistant Professor Minimum Qualificat ion:
  • Terminal doctoral degree or equivalent (DrPH, PhD, MD, MBBS) in public health, community health, medicine, or related area from a college or university of recognized standing.
  • Evidence of teaching, evaluation, scholarship, and program administration
  • Ability to serve as a role model for students and junior colleagues
  • Evidence of research/scholarship in public health, cancer, chronic disease, diabetes, or related areas
  • General knowledge of basic medical and cancer terminology
  • Evidence of ability to plan, organize, and supervise public health activities
  • General knowledge of federal funding, including budgets
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with others
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Familiarity with Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion concepts
  • Experience working in multicultural settings
  • Ability to travel within and to the USAPI and domestically within the US
  • Demonstrated potential for research/scholarship
Assistant Professor Desirable Qualifications :
  • At least five (5) years of working in the USAPI or Oceania
  • Familiarity with the USAPI culture and languages
  • Demonstrated ability to actively collaborate on public health programs
  • Familiarity with health care systems and structures in the USAPI
  • Leadership in US Federal or World Health Organization initiatives related to cancer or other chronic diseases
Associate Professor Minimum Qualifications : ● In addition to those of Assistant Professors, minimum qualifications include A minimum of four (4) years in the rank of Assistant Professor or four years of other public health program and grants management experience (such as cancer, diabetes, tobacco, and other non-communicable disease) [LBL1] or one (1) year at the rank of Associate Professor at another LCME or COCA-AOA accredited medical school Proven ability in teaching, research, and program administration Experience working on US Federal or World Health Organization (WHO) projects related to cancer and/or other chronic diseasesKnowledge and experience with managing federal funding, including budgets Associate Professor Desirable Qualifications :
  • At least five (5) years of working in the USAPI or Oceania
  • Familiarity with the USAPI culture and languages
  • Demonstrated ability to actively collaborate on public health programs
  • Familiarity with health care systems and structures in the USAPI
  • Leadership in US Federal or World Health Organization initiatives related to cancer or other chronic diseases
