Job Description

This is a 100% Limited position for one year. This appointment may be extended or converted to career status based on the needs of the department. DESCRIPTION The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry strives to be a top-ranked and recognized leader in the chemical and biochemical sciences through transformative research and impactful educational programs. Chemistry and Biochemistry is one of the largest and most complex departments on campus. The department's organization is divided among three major academic sections each with its own leadership representation under the Department Chair: Physical, Analytical & Environmental (PAE); Biochemistry & Biophysics (BB); and finally Synthesis, Materials and Chemical Biology (SMCB). The department is comprised of 75 ladder rank faculty, and additional 10 in various instructional titles and ~150 in academic research titles and postdoctoral scholars. The department is comprised of 90 career staff; ~60 temporary or student staff, and 480 Master's and Ph.D. students. Undergraduate students majoring in chemistry number greater than 1,700, and total undergraduate and graduate annual course enrollments exceed 23,000. The department manages three major NIH training grants, and one Department of Education training grant, which fund graduate and postdoctoral students across UCSD departments/disciplines as well as off campus research organizations. The department currently has more than 120 awards from federal, state and private sources for approximately $20 million per annum in extramural funding and $46 million in total annual expenditures. The research program in the Guseman lab explore protein-glycan interactions and to understand the biophysical basis of glycan recognition. Under supervision, incumbent will assist in conducting research into protein glycan interactions, both in vitro and in physiologically relevant environments. Incumbent will utilize routine methods in molecular biology for protein expression and purification and charecterize these proteins using high resolution protein NMR, BLI, Light Scattering, and additional biophysical methods. Finally, incumbent will be expected to fully integrate into the laboratory, where they will perform routine lab duties, participate in lab meetings, and work effectively as a team member. Must be willing to work with hazardous materials. QUALIFICATIONS Experience with protein visualization software (e.g. PyMol or Chimera). Theoretical and practical knowledge of protein chemistry and characterization techniques acquired through a Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry, Biophysics, or a related field. Skills in protein expression and purification. General knowledge in glycobiology. Ability to process and analyze data in common software suites such as ImageJ, ChemDraw, Benchling, and MNova Experience with MAC or PC programs, file making, spreadsheet, and graphics software; willingness and ability to update and increase computer skills and knowledge as needed. Knowledge, understanding and experience with Safety Data Sheets, hazard communication and Injury and Illness Prevention Program. Limited familiarity with a Chemical Hygiene Plan addressing safety precautions including appropriate clothing and shoes, safe handling of chemicals, use of protective items. Willingness and ability to keep safety training current and consistent with research involvement. Positive interpersonal oral and written communication skills using tact, diplomacy, discretion, and flexibility with diverse personalities and situations. Ability to communicate effectively one-on-one or in group settings, taking into account differences in social, cultural, professional, and educational backgrounds. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and procedures. Organizational skills, including ability to keep clear and accurate records and follow written and oral lab protocols. Must be flexible and able to function in a fast-paced and changing work environment. Understanding of the importance of ensuring an equitable, inclusive, and diverse working environment, with the ability to work as a part of a diverse and collaborative team.
